Blizzard notes on its support page that problems with SMS verification can arise if players use an internet or prepaid phone number. The company has not disclosed plans to fix those issues, even though the move has recently been criticized by players using such phone numbers to play Overwatch. News of the requirement comes following a week of controversy around SMS Protect, the phone-linking system in use by Overwatch 2 and soon Modern Warfare II. After a bumpy launch that saw a DDoS attack prevent many from playing Overwatch 2 on its release day, Blizzard announced it would scale back the requirement. Where the studio previously said all players would need to link a phone number to their Battle.net account, now that requisite only falls on new Overwatch players. In part, the system has been controversial because “certain pre-paid” numbers could not be used in conjunction with SMS Protect. Before Friday, players with service from mobile providers like Cricket Wireless found they could not play the game. It's a cruel issue for players who just want to get stuck into the latest Call Of Duty action. Thankfully, there's a fairly straightforward fix, which we'll detail in this guide. Follow the steps below and you'll be back to playing TDM and Prisoner Rescue in no time. Overwatch 1 players who already had a Battle.net account no longer need to provide their phone number, according to Blizzard. New players, and players without a Battle.net account, are still required to verify their account via SMS. Users can only associate one phone number with an account and that number can only be used for one Battle.net account. Blizzard is using SMS verification to better secure an account and to ban previously banned players if they want to create a new account. At the moment, it’s unclear if all Warzone 2.0 players will need a mobile phone number to play that game once it arrives on November 16th. Since 2020, Infinity Ward has required all free-to-play Warzone users on PC to go through a two-factor authentication process. Activision Blizzard did not immediately respond to Engadget’s request for clarification and comment.
